Local Attractions

Besides the amazing Temuka Recreation Reserve, there are plenty of local attractions in and around Temuka.

Main Street Shopping

The attractive Town Centre of Temuka is a delightful, quaint area to walk through, along with the local square offering an area to sit and relax.

With takeaways, banks, boutique shopping, cafes, library, second-hand shops, post shop, hotels and dairys lining the streets, you will have all you need just 500m from the Holiday Park.

As with any small community town, you will find the service fantastic and the locals friendly and helpful.

Pottery

The Iconic Temuka Pottery brand is well known throughout New Zealand.  Dating back to the early 1930's, it has come a long way from the brown gravy jug, dinner set range to a modern, sophisticated and artistic range of tableware and home decorative ornaments.  You can shop on-line, but a trip through the shop is well worth the visit.

Richard William Pearse Monument

Local farmer, inventor and aviation enthusiast Richard Pearse (born in 1877) built and flew this model aircraft from 1903.

There is some debate as to whether the maiden flight was before the Wright Brothers, but whatever your opinion, the monument is a fantastic piece of engineering and history.

The South Canterbury Museum in Timaru holds more information and relics from Pearse's inventive past.

Fishing

The Temuka area is a renowned fishing haven.  From the Temuka River to the Opihi and Rangitata Mouth, you will find many anglers trying their luck along the riverbanks and rivermouths throughout the salmon and trout fishing seasons.
